Wini Carter, age 94, of Little Rock, Arkansas died on May 21, 2021. She was born in Newton, Kansas. She attended the public schools in El Dorado, Kansas, graduated from El Dorado High in 1944, and enrolled at Kansas State University. After completing her studies, she taught girl’s physical education at El Dorado High School, where she was also in charge of the girl’s pep club.
Wini was an avid sports fan and participant in athletic activities. Like most people growing up west of the Mississippi in that era, she was a St. Louis Cardinals fan. However, when Dizzy Dean was traded to the Chicago Cubs she went with Dizzy Dean and remained a Cubs fan the remainder of her life. In El Dorado she was in charge of the Red Cross swimming program for Butler County, Kansas, for approximately twenty years. The program taught thousands of people to swim and to progress through the various levels of swimming up to a Senior Lifeguard certification. She enjoyed golf, prior to taking up tennis.
Wini and her husband, Dick Carter, deceased, moved to Little Rock in the early seventies. She developed a passionate interest in tennis, first playing at the neighborhood Sturbridge Courts, and then Westside Tennis Center, now the Little Rock Athletic Club. Wini developed good friends through tennis, and played on several USTA team tennis teams which qualified for the Southern Regionals. Naturally, she became an avid Razorback fan. She was a member of PEO and was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Wini is survived by her two sons, Dan Carter (Jean) of Little Rock and Thom Carter (Phyllis) of Wellesley, Massachusetts; four grandchildren, Catie Carter Thacker, Christen Carter, Madeline Carter and Kosal Carter; and one great-grandchild, Elaine Thacker.
A private funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 29, 2021, at Christ Episcopal Church, 509 Scott Street, Little Rock, Arkansas, followed by interment at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1101 N, Mississippi, Little Rock. Officiants will be the Rev. Dr. Kate Alexander, and the Rev. Roy Smith. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made in her honor to Trinity Methodist Church, 1101 N. Mississippi, Little Rock, AR 72207, or Presbyterian Village, 500 Brookside Dr., Little Rock, AR 72205. The family wishes to thank the caregivers and staff of Presbyterian Village where she spent the last few years of her life.
