William L. "Bill" Newberry age 88, of Arkadelphia, died Tuesday, December 26, 2006 in Little Rock. He was born November 16, 1918, the son of Jacob Lawrence and Mildred Gerig Newberry. Bill attended Henderson State Teachers College and graduated from the University of Arkansas. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and an Eagle Scout. He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps, serving in Italy during World War II and attained the rank of Captain.
Bill was in the feed and farm Business and later in the property and casualty insurance business retiring in 1982. He was active in community affairs, serving on the board and president of State Mutual Insurance Agents Association, Arkadelphia Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club and Clark County Historical Association. Bill served on the boards of the Henderson State University Alumni Association, Arkadelphia Country Club, Clark County Arts Council, Arkansas Food Bank Network and the First United Methodist Church. After retirement, he was very active serving as treasurer and board member of Clark County Historical Association and was instrumental in the restoration of the Arkadelphia Railroad Depot and establishing the Clark County Historical Museum.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Newberry; one son, Tom Newberry of Reston, Virginia; one daughter, Janie Jones of Kansas City, Missouri and two grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, December 30, 2006 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Daniel Kirkpatrick officiating. Burial will be private. Visitation will be 6-8 PM Friday at Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home.
