Wilburn Davis

Wilburn Davis, age 87, of The Woodlands, Texas, formerly of Glenwood, passed away on Monday, June 25, 2018, in the Brookdale Assisted Living and Memory Care Center in The Woodlands, Texas. He was born on April 25, 1931, in Hopper, the son of Bill and Tina Davis. On October 8, 1950, he was married to Barbara Jean Davis, who preceded him in death on January 6, 2013. He was also preceded in death by his oldest son, Ronald Davis, who died on September 9, 1981, from Legionnaires disease at the age of 28; his parents; three sisters, Ellen Davis, Gloria Davis and Jean Coleman; and one brother, Danny Davis. He was a member of the Church of Christ. In 1949, he graduated from Caddo Gap, and continued on to receive his B.S.E. and M.S.E. degrees from Henderson State University in Arkadelphia. His administrators certificate and advanced work was from both Henderson and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, was certified to teach mathematics and physical education and was a lifetime member of state professional organizations. His 31-year professional career began in 1955 in Prattsville, teaching three math classes and coaching four basketball teams in addition to driving a school bus. After two years, he took the position of high school principal, math teacher, and basketball coach in Poyen. The next position was in Scranton as superintendent, where he was the youngest school superintendent in the state at the time. He was also the superintendent for Kirby for eight years, from 1960 thru 1968, Amity for nine years, from 1968 thru 1977, Van Cove for one year, 1977 thru 1978, Fouke for four years from 1978 thru 1982, and Caddo Hills for four years from 1982 thru 1986. Wilburn is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Betsy Davis of Spring, Texas; two grandsons and their spouses, Jeffrey and Marisa Davis of Mesa, Arizona and Philip and SaraAnne Davis of New Palestine, Indiana; three great-grandchildren, Audrey, Austin and Kennedy; his six brothers and sisters, Helen Robison of Bokoshe, Oklahoma, Faye George of Spring, Texas, Bonnie Reid of Sugar Land, Texas, Nelda Winkler of Giddings, Texas, James Davis of Midwest City, Oklahoma and Frank Davis of Edmond, Oklahoma; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and a host of wonderful friends. Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, June 30, 2018, in the Davis-Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Glenwood with Harold Vaughn, Frank Davis and Jeff Davis officiating. Visitation will be held Saturday, 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM, at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Hopper Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood.
