Wames Monroe Qualls, age 95, passed away Sunday, August 2,2015. He was born on the family farm in the small community of Centerville (Faulkner County), Arkansas to James M. and Lora C. Qualls. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Arvie Qualls and O.F. Qualls, two sisters, Velma Mauldin and Vida Hartwick, and his wife of 58 years, Johnnie Ruth Elza Qualls.
He attended Arkansas State Teachers College ( now University of Central Arkansas) and graduated from Arkansas State University at Beebe. He started his newspaper advertising career at the Log Cabin Democrat in Conway, Arkansas in 1943, then moved to the Pine Bluff Commercial in 1946 . In 1952 his career moved him to the Arkansas Democrat, now the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, where he retired after 35 years of service.
He was a 33rd degree Mason and a member of Albert Pike Lodge 714, Arkansas Consistory, and Scimitar Shrine Temple. He served as Potentate of Scimitar Temple in 1974, and was past director of Court 12 Jesters. He was a member of Pulaski Heights Baptist Church and the Arkansas Glasshoppers.
He is survived by a daughter, Shirley McCone of Conway; a son Gary (Rebecca ) Qualls of Little Rock; five grandchildren, Meredith Bishop (Michael) of Fayetteville, Jason Qualls of Conway, Jennifer Santiago of Little Rock, Craig Dunn ( Monica) of Conway, and Holly Dunn of Hot Springs; and ten great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to acknowledge the staff of Elmcroft Assisted Living and Memory Care for the love and attention they gave during the last four years of his life, and Gentiva Hospice.
Visitation will be Tuesday, August 4 from 5-7 p.m. at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Ct. (NW corner I-630 and Barrow Rd.). Graveside services will be Wednesday, August 5 at 10:00 a.m. at Forest Hills Memorial Park, officiated by Chaplain Ed McDonald. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to any of the Shriners' Hospitals for Children (www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org), Alzeimers Foundation, or Pulaski Heights Baptist Church.
