Vivian Beth Whelan Rowden, 92, of Little Rock, gained her angel wings on February 18th, 2008 and went to be with the Lord.
Mrs. Rowden was born on February 10th, 1916 in Durant, New Mexico. She grew up in Fayetteville, Arkansas and graduated from the University of Arkansas with a Bachelor of Science degree. She and Carl Rowden married on July 13th, 1941, and were married for 64 years. While Carl served overseas, Beth taught home economics in several small Arkansas school districts. She also was a home extension service worker for several years. Beth became a housewife after their son was born.
Upon Carl's return from service, the Rowdens moved to New York for a short time, returning to establish their home in Little Rock. They were among the first residents at Parkway Village and made their home there for over 23 years. Beth was very active in her church, Asbury United Methodist, and was a member of The Robert Moore Bible Class for over 65 years. She taught Sunday school, sang in the choir for many years, and was president of the Women's Society several times. Beth was also a lifetime member of Delta Theta Tau sorority. She enjoyed music and loved to cook.
Beth was preceded in death by her husband, Carl E. Rowden, her sister, Vera Whelan Green and her brother, Clark Whelan. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Carlos and Sheila Rowden and three grandchildren, Jeff, Brad, and Monica Rowden, all of Springdale, Arkansas.
Visitation will be Thursday, February 21st from 3 pm - 5 pm at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Ct. (NW corner I-630 and Barrow Rd.), Little Rock. A graveside service will be held at Forest Hills Memorial Park at 9 a.m., Friday, February 22, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel at Parkway Village, 14300 Chenal Parkway.
The family asks that memorials be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, 1700 Napa Valley, Little Rock AR 72212, or to the American Diabetes Foundation.
