Virgil Willard Morton, 97, of North Little Rock, AR passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on Monday, March 24, 2025. He was born on April 5, 1927, in Tuckerman, Arkansas to Burl Monroe Morton and Annie M. Huskey Morton. Virgil was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, William Monroe Morton, Wesley Leon Morton and sisters, Mary Dathine Morton Carter and Murl Willine Morton. Virgil was also preceded in death by his son, Joel Edward Morton, US Air Force Vietnam veteran and Joel’s mother, Mary Morton Brown. A stepson, Mark Rhodes (Cindy) also preceded his death.
Virgil was honorably discharged from the US Marine Corps as a sharpshooter after World War II. He worked for many years in Rockford, IL before retiring and returning to his beloved Arkansas. For over 30 years, Virgil enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors after retirement. He dearly loved his family, spent many hours fishing with his brothers, hunting and fishing with his many friends near Camden and putting on a fish fry every Sunday in North Little Rock. Virgil was a longtime and faithful member of North Hills Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife Marie Murphy Morton, stepchildren, Murphy Rhodes (Alice) and Martha Grover (Lon) and many other family members who loved him dearly.
A graveside service with Military Honors will be held in Virgil’s honor on March 31, 2025, at 12:00 PM at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery located at 1501 West Maryland Avenue, North Little Rock, AR. Those planning to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home to process to the cemetery.
