Vester Wolber

Vester Eugene Wolber was born on the West Bank of Mud Creek near Parks, Arkansas on November 18, 1913 to John William and Mary Elizabeth Wolber. He graduated from Waldron High School in 1934 and served in the U. S. Navy. Vester attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, after a year there he transferred to Ouachita Baptist College where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1938. He went on to attend Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary where he received a Masters of Theology in 1945, followed by a doctorate in 1950.

Vester Wolber was instrumental in founding the Southern Baptist General Convention of California on September 13, 1940 and served as the initial Secretary of the Convention. Dr. Wolber became an instructor at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas and was named the Chairman of the Department of Bible in 1951. He served as pastor of Central Baptist Church in Livingston, Texas and Central Baptist Church in Marshall, Texas. Dr. Wolber returned to Ouachita Baptist College in 1958, where he chaired the Department of Religion & Philosophy. He continued to teach at Ouachita until his retirement in May of 1985 at the age of 72.

After retirement he lived in his home in Arkadelphia and Parkway Village in Little Rock with his wife Frances until she passed away in 2004 and then moved to Fountain Hills, Arizona to be near family until he passed away on Saturday, May 24th, 2008 at the age of 94 ½.

Survivors include two sons and their families; Eric Eugene Wolber and his spouse Patricia Ann who reside in Rio Verde, Arizona and their daughter Dr. Amberly Kay Windisch and her spouse Michael Windisch and their two children Zachary Michael and Anna Leah Windisch who reside in Lexington, Kentucky and Noel Wolber and his spouse Marsha Wolber and their two daughters Kristin and Kellyn Wolber who reside in Fairfax, Virginia.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday, June 4, 2008 in the Berry Chapel on Ouachita Baptist University Campus. Interment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 5-9 PM Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home in Arkadelphia. Memorials may be made to the Wolber Family Endowment Scholarship Fund at Ouachita Baptist University.
