Vernon Don Newcomb, 78, of Benton, Arkansas passed away February 15, 2022. Don was born August 22, 1943 to the late Inez (Hester) and Pat Newcomb.
Don is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Phyllis Newcomb; his parents; brother, Gary Newcomb; and sisters: Patricia Larsen and Theda White.
Don graduated from the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and went on to become a renowned equine veterinarian and thoroughbred trainer, serving as the state veterinarian at many of the country’s finest racetracks.
Don and Phyllis were inseparable during life and now, death. He was the type of man that never left you wondering long how or where you stood with him, and never found a problem he couldn’t solve with sheer will and determination. Although Don may have been an outlaw by nature, he had a gentle heart. Later in life, Don’s hobbies included gardening and enjoying a slower pace, but he was never found too far from a racing form.
Don is survived by his two sons: Scott and Brad Newcomb and their wives Kelley and Stephanie; five grandchildren: Jake, Dillon, Noah, Jude, and Silas; siblings Brenda Johnson and David Newcomb; and a lifetime of family and friends made who will all miss him dearly.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to Cancer Research Institute.
Visitation will be held Friday, February 25 from 2:00-3:00 PM at Smith-Benton Funeral Home followed by a memorial service at 3:00 PM.
