Verda Carter Franz, 91 of North Little Rock, the widow of Charles M. "Buddy" Franz, died February 7, 2010. She was born on January 22, 1919.
Verda is preceded in death by her parents, James Winfield Carter and Mollie Carter Dearien, her loving step-father, John C. Dearien, her sister, Jemmie Lancaster and husband Charles K. Lancaster, Jr., her brother Curtis Carter and wife Hazel, her son-in-law, Larry D. Shelton, and brother-in-law Bob Walters.
Verda grew up in Mountain View, Arkansas and graduated from Mountain View High School and Draughon School of Business in Little Rock. She was employed in the Fiscal Department of the Pine Bluff Arsenal during World War II. Verda married Buddy in March, 1946 and became a homemaker until her children were grown. She worked at Capitol Chemical Company until the death of her husband. Verda was then employed by the Headquarters, 122nd U.S. Army Reserve Command as a budget assistant until her retirement.
Verda and her husband were long-time residents of the Lakewood neighborhood in North Little Rock. They were one of the first 20 houses in the development when they purchased their house in 1948. She remained in her residence until December, 2004.
Verda is a member of Immaculate Conception Church in North Little Rock.
Survivors are her daughter, Myra Shelton Wilson and husband Bruce of Hot Springs, and her son Charles C. Franz, Colonel (Ret.) of Homer, Alaska, her sister Jean Walters of Fayetteville, Arkansas, three grandsons, Jason Franz of Marietta, Georgia, Chris Shelton and wife Melany of North Little Rock, and Raymond Wilson and wife Jasmin of Little Rock, two granddaughters, Melissa Shelton of Mayflower, Arkansas, and Julie Franz of Portland, Oregon. She leaves six beautiful great-granddaughters whom she adored, Aleks and Annie Shelton, Savannah and Molly Shelton, and Breezy and Windy Wilson. She is also survived by her special friend Kenneth Brock of Memphis, Tennessee.
The family would like to thank the staff of Elmcroft Assisted Living and Lakewood Nursing and Rehab for their tender loving care. The family would also like to thank the "angels" at Arkansas Hospice for their care in Mother's last days.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at the North Little Rock Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at Immaculate Conception Church in North Little Rock on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at 12:00 PM. Burial will be in Rest Hills Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to Immaculate Conception Building Fund or the charity of your choice.
