Velma O. Simmons, 87, of Little Rock passed away Sunday, May 8, 2016. Velma was born January 19, 1929 in Osyka, Mississippi to Odie James and Carolyn Lois Knippers McElveen. She was employed by the Little Rock Municipal Water Works for 38 years retiring in 1995 and was a member of Forest Tower Baptist Church. She loved camping, fishing, flea markets and travel, her bag was always packed and ready to go. Velma was the life of the party loving drag racing and roller coasters. She loved life, fiercely protective of family and loved unconditionally making friends everywhere she went. Her favorite thing to do was spend time with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her four children, James Brown (Jody), Brenda Smith (Vernon), Robert Brown (Janie), and Denise Oden (Tim); ten grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and brother, James McElveen (Peggy). She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Dr. Nolan L. "Doc" Simmons.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Forest Tower Baptist Church, Hensley, Arkansas. There will be a private burial at the AR State Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
