Vance L. Thomas, 93, of Little Rock, went home to be with the Lord on November 8, 2007. He lived a life of service, serving his Lord, his country, his city and his family throughout his life.
He was a member of Calvary Church of the Nazarene, where he attended regularly until the last years of his life. He loved to talk about the Lord and never hesitated to tell people we "need to be ready."
Vance served his country by fighting in World War II from 1942-1945. He bravely participated in the Normandy Invasion on D-Day. He was a corporal in the Army, and received the Purple Heart, Medal of Good Conduct, three Bronze Medals and a Victory Ribbon.
He loved nature and animals, serving the City of Little Rock as a foreman at the Little Rock Zoo for 30 years until his retirement.
Vance shared a wonderful life with Erma Stimson Thomas, the love of his life. He was the patriarch of the Thomas family. The oldest of ten children, he had a strong sense of family and enjoyed being with those he loved.
Vance was preceded in death by his parents, William H. and Gladys Blevins Thomas; brothers, Bill Thomas and Dale Thomas; and sisters, Sibyl T. Mann, Joyce Gray, Doris Linz and Gayle Pounders. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Erma Thomas; one sister, Juanita (Nita) Curtis of Perryville; two brothers, Robert (Bobby) Thomas of Benton and Richard M. (Dick) Thomas of Little Rock; and a host of nieces and nephews. Vance's sense of humor and quick wit and words of advice will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Unit 1H at the NLR Veterans Health System, as well as the Stepdown Unit at the LR VA Hospital for their loving care of Vance and his family during the last two months.
Visitation will be on Sunday, November 11, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Ct. (NW corner of I-630 and Barrow Rd.), Little Rock.
