Truett M. Goatcher, 85, of Little Rock, passed away August 29, 2009. Born April 2, 1924 in Formosa, Arkansas to James M. and Ruth Allen Goatcher, he was a United States Army veteran of World War II and a longtime member of Lakeshore Drive Baptist Church.
Following WWII, Mr. Goatcher graduated from Ouachita Baptist College and obtained his Master's Degree from George Peabody College for Teachers in 1954. He began as a high school math teacher in Helena-West Helena, served as principal for six years, then worked as Director of Instruction for the school district there and in Jonesboro. Upon moving to Little Rock, he joined the staff of the State Department of Education where he served for 22 years, retiring in 1987. He then worked as Director of Research for the School Administrators' Association for 17 years before retiring again after 54 years in public education. The Arkansas Association of School Board Officials (AASBO) honored him by designating the Annual Administrator of the Year Award in his name.
Mr. Goatcher is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Lillian Williams Goatcher; daughter, Carolyn Sparks of Little Rock; sons, Jack Goatcher and wife, Frances of Conway and Ken Goatcher and wife, Nona of Little Rock; brother, Earl Goatcher and wife, Joann of Clinton; sister, Lavelle Rollins and husband, Bob of Little Rock; grandchildren, Jennifer Seminar of Maumelle, Jason Goatcher of Conway and Jeremy Goatcher of North Carolina; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 3 at Lakeshore Drive Baptist Church, 21 Lakeshore Drive, Little Rock, officiated by Rev. Dickie Boyles. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Halbrook Cemetery in Conway County. The family will greet friends Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Ct. (NW corner I-630 and Barrow Rd.), Little Rock.
