Tommie Bettis Carleton died in Cuernavaca, Mexico on May 13, 2009 where he had lived since 2004. He was born in Grove Hill, Alabama in 1914. He is survived by his only son, Henry Frank Carleton and daughter-in-law, Terri and granddaughter, Kimberly Nogueira, all of Grapevine, Texas; sisters-in-law, Estella "Percy" del Castillo and Alicia del Castillo Dunn; nieces, Laura Martinez, Norma del Castillo Dunn and Colleen Frierson; and nephews, Miguel and Jorge Martinez, Marcelo and Luis del Castillo Mussot, and Ronald, Perry and David Carleton.
Tommie was preceded in death by his wife, Laura del Castillo of Mexico City; his father, William L. Carleton; his mother, Lillie White; sister, Grace McGaughey; brothers, Frank, Issac, Vernon and William Carleton; mother-in-law, Francisca del Castillo Gama; sister-in- law, Luchita Castillo Martinez; and brothers-in-law, Ramido Martinez and Marcelo del Castillo.
Tommie grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas and began work delivering telegrams by bicycle and sewing buttons at the Tuff Nut garment factory. He later became a brakeman for the Rock Island Railroad and retired in 1974 from the Missouri Pacific Railroad as a conductor after 35 years of service. He met his late wife, Laura, while she was on vacation with her sisters in Acapulco Mexico, and they were married in 1955. During the 1960's, he would take his family by train every summer to visit relatives in Mexico City. Tommie attended the Methodist Church until the death of his wife, then converted to the Catholic faith.
In 2004, after suffering a stroke, Tommie became a resident at Centro Yalentay, a geriatric residence in Cuernavaca. With the loving care of the Director, Ms. Tina Nelson and her staff of caregivers and doctors, he lived his final years in the city of "Eternal Spring".
A private family gathering was held in Cuernavaca to honor and remember Tommie, assisted by Gayosso Funeral Home. His remains will be placed in the family plot at Roselawn Cemetery in Little Rock, Arkansas.
