Thomas Powell

Dr. Tom Powell, 69, of Little Rock, passed away June 26, 2011. He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina to Luther E. and Selma Shillcut Powell and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He graduated in 1960 from Castle Heights Military Academy where he carried the school flag in the Honor Guard and was Captain of the Academy Rifle Team. He attended Hendrix College and Arkansas State Teachers College, graduating from the University of Arkansas in 1964. He obtained his Master's Degree in Psychology in 1966 and his Ph.D. in 1970.
Dr. Powell's career included the positions of Psychologist and Team Leader at Fort Logan Mental Health Center, Denver, Colorado, a private practice in primal therapy and group therapist with heroin addicts at the Colorado Springs Health Department, the Mesa County Mental Health Center, Grand Junction, Colorado, Santa Barbara Convalescent Center in California, Hot Springs Rehabilitation Center, Southwest Arkansas Mental Health Center, Hope satellite; Cummins Unit and the Diagnostic Center, Special Programs Unit of the Arkansas Department of Corrections. Dr. Powell was Chief Psychologist of the Conway Human Development Center from 1985 to 2003. He was a member of the American and Arkansas Psychological Associations, AAMD, ARC, University of Arkansas Alumni Association and Sigma Xi, the national Scientific Research Society.
He is survived by his wife, Holly Harrington Powell; daughter, Mary Lee Powell of Denver; son, Matthew E. Powell of the U.S. Navy; grandson, Mac Powell Thompson of Denver; nephew, John Michael Powell of Los Angeles, California; dear friend, Kenny Youngblood; and his faithful pets, Rusty, Mocha, Jesse and Sally. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John E. Powell.
Services will be held on Thursday, June 30 at 11:00 a.m. at Second Presbyterian Church, officiated by Rev. Dr. Karen Akin. The family will greet friends at the church following the service.
