Sybil Barksdale

Sybil Callaway Barksdale, age 85 of Curtis, AR died Saturday, December 06, 2008 in Heather Manor at Hope. She was born August 2, 1923, the daughter of Sam D. and Fay Patterson Callaway. Sybil was a wife, mother and homemaker until 1956 when she enrolled in the Arkadelphia School of Cosmetology. Upon finishing her studies there, she opened her own beauty shop and served as owner and operator for 25 years. In 1982 she became a foster grandparent at Perritt Elementary School. In 1986 she was asked to come to Ouachita Baptist University as a dorm mom at O. C. Bailey Dorm and remained in this position until 1999. After retirement from OBU she returned to the public school system at Perritt Elementary.

Sybil was very devoted to her family, her friends and Curtis Baptist Church where she served in several capacities over the years. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren, each of whom she was very proud. In 1987 while she was serving as dorm mom at OBU, 3 of her granddaughters attended Girl's State at the same time. She was extremely proud to be recognized at one of the sessions for having those 3 granddaughters in attendance.

Her husband, Harold Barksdale, two brothers, James "Sonny" Callaway, Paul Davis Callaway, two sisters, Helen Holloway and Jessie Metcalf, preceded her in death.

She is survived by Hazel Hawkins and husband Mark of Parkdale, Judy Plyler and her husband Wendell of Benton, Kathy Clark and her husband Gary of Hope, and David Barksdale and his wife Sandy of Texarkana, TX, two sisters, Lois Mcanally of Prescott and Sammie Jean Henry of Marion, a special sister-in-law Agnes Stone of Whelen Springs, a brother-in-law Ben Metcalf of Curtis, 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
