Susan Vereen

Susan Jones Vereen, born June 11, 1956, to Bill and Joyce Jones of Memphis, Tennessee, left her Earthly body to join her Lord and Savior on May 21, 2021. Susan was a proud Christian, loving mother, sister, daughter, and wife. She answered her life’s calling of helping others by working as a Respiratory Therapist for forty-five (45) years. She spent the past thirty (30) years calling Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock home. As a Respiratory Therapist, she was an active member of the rapid response team. When asked what she did for a living, she always gleefully replied, “I suck snot for a living.” She loved her job, her work family, and, most importantly, helping countless families navigate some of the worst days of their lives.

Susan was always a caring and loving woman. She put everyone ahead of her own needs and wants. While many can be said to be the type that would give the shirt off of their back, Susan literally has numerous times.

Susan fought for over a decade with advanced metastatic Melanoma. Those who knew her would likely agree with saying she was a fighter until the very end. Yet, she was a deeply private person never wanting to burden others with her battles. In line with putting others ahead of herself, she never quit working to save lives and help patients. She proudly worked as a front-line medical worker during COVID. She often had treatments on one day and would be back to work the following morning—helping others navigate turbulent waters. She worked until August of 2020, when multiple doctors convinced her to spend the time she had left with friends and family.

Susan is cherished by too many people to list. She is predeceased by her father (Bill Jones). She is survived by her mother (Joyce), brothers Sanford Jones and Josh Jones, and sister Shirley Jones. She leaves behind her loving spouse and best friend of thirty-one (31) years, Bill Vereen of North Little Rock, Arkansas. Also left behind, are her pride and joy children, Shelby Elizabeth Vereen and William Spencer Vereen (Katie) of North Little Rock, Arkansas. Other family members include numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Just as important, she leaves behind innumerable co-workers—who she frequently referred to as her “family.” Lastly, she leaves behind her three beloved dogs: Aspen, Dixie, and Ollie.

Her family asks for continued love, thoughts, and prayers. They take solace in knowing that she fought so long to give them every ounce of her being. They know that she is resting comfortably and is no longer in pain. They are comforted by the knowledge that she lived her life as her Lord and Savior commanded her in John 13:34 “A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also must love one another.”
