Susan "Suzie" Bell James, 60, passed away in her hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas on April 11, 2016. She was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1955 to Paul and Donna Bell. Graduating from Redford High School on Oahu Island, Hawaii, she went on to complete one year at the University of Hawaii in 1974. She later received her Bachelor of Arts in Education, with a minor in Library Science from the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.
For several years, Suzie worked at Oakbrooke Elementary as their Media Specialist, where she invested in the lives of many students and staff. The library was dedicated to her legacy upon her retirement. She met her future husband at Indian Hills Baptist Church, and the two were married on February 5, 1983. After her two daughters were born, Suzie taught art lessons from her home and later became an administrative consultant for Weaver and Associates.
Suzie brought joy and creativity to all of her relationships, and her passion for Jesus Christ encompassed her life and drew others close to her. She was a devoted member of Fellowship Bible Church. Her generosity was tangibly felt through her many endeavors, such as actively volunteering in the Little Rock Public Schools for over 15 years and leading the No Excuses Mentoring Programs at Dunbar Middle School and Central High. She also expressed her love for others through cooking and her artistic flare.
She is survived by her husband, Richard James; her daughters, Greta and Emily James; her father, Paul Bell; her siblings, Linda Hargrave (John), Lisa Maulden (Chuck), Steve Bell and Paula Land (Billy); her brother-in-law, Kim Moore; and a host of nieces and nephews. Suzie was preceded in death by her mother, Donna Bell, mother-in-law, Martha James, and sisters-in-law, Megan Bell and Nancy Moore.
Suzie's visitation is open to all at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Ct. (NW corner I-630 and Barrow Rd.) this evening, Thursday, April 14 from 6-8 p.m. Her funeral will take place in the Chapel of Fellowship Bible Church at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 15. Guests are encouraged to enter at the South entrance. A luncheon for all friends and family will immediately follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Suzie Bell James grant for the Art Therapy Program at Memory Care of Little Rock at Good Shepherd, or to Book Aid International, which supports literacy for underserved populations in Africa.
