Steven "BDBG" Douglas Phillips, 63, of Cabot, Arkansas, drew his last breath at 12:12 a.m. on October 11, 2010, and left this life to spend eternal life with Jesus, while his family stood by his side. Born September 27, 1947 in Dallas, Texas to Betty and Melvyn Phillips who survive him today.
Steve, a self-proclaimed redneck conservative, was a charter boat captain for 10 years in Little Cayman and St. Thomas, where he boasted of catching and releasing 208 Blue Marlin. After 10 years in the Caribbean, Steve ended his early retirement, returned to the US and resumed his career as a medical supply salesman. He was employed at Preferred Medical in Conway, Arkansas.
Known to love ones, friends and customers as a devoted, caring and loyal man, Steve was loved and respected by all who knew him. True to his character, Steve fought a strong and courageous 13 month battle with lung cancer without ever losing his dignity or wonderful positive mindset.
Steve is preceded in death by his younger brother Kurt. He is survived by the love of his life, Robin Gulzow; his son, Doug Phillips and wife Becca of Conway, Arkansas; his two grandchildren, the lights of his life, Morgan Grace (3), and Reid Christopher (1), his sister Melissa Grant of Clearwater, Florida, and his golden-doodle Molly.
The family would like to thank Dr. Larry Mendelsohn and Dr. Scott Wofford for their impeccable care through the last 7 years. Also, a special thanks to all of the family and friends who cared for and supported Steve through his journey.
Memorial service will be held at the North Little Rock Funeral Home, 1921 Main, 758-1170, at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 16, 2010. Immediately following the family will be hosting a celebration of Steve's life at Juanita's Party Room, (1220 Main Street, Little Rock). At the peak of Blue Marlin season, Steve's family will spread his ashes at his favorite fishing spot in the Caribbean.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, CARTI foundation, or your favorite conservative candidate running for office this November.
