Stephen Fowler Spargo of Arkadelphia died on August 8, 2007. Mr. Spargo leaves his wife of 68 years, the former Johnnie Mae Walker; a son, Byron Spargo, and his wife, Mary Lynda, of Baton Rouge; three daughters, Nancy DeLamar of Little Rock, Dr. Linda Spargo of Oxford, Mississippi; and Jamie Gibbs of Sheridan; five granddaughters, Gwendy Clingman, Megan Schroeder, Leslie Spargo, Hattie Alton, and Johni Beth Gibbs; three great-granddaughters, Lauren, Frances and Eleanor, and one great-grandson, Ryan.
Born on January 29, 1916, Mr. Spargo was a native of Hot Springs who was preceded in death by his parents, Edith Fowler and Stephen Dudley Spargo; his five siblings, James Spargo, Dr. Mary Spargo, David Spargo, Elsie Rapley, and Bea Parkinson; and two sons-in-law, Allen DeLamar and Billy Gibbs.
Like his father, grandfather, and later, his son, Mr. Spargo was an engineer, applying methodical logic and reasoning to all matters. He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1938 with a degree in mechanical engineering and retired following a long career in that field with Reynolds Metals, now Alcoa.
Although he was an accomplished senior golfer and an avid fisherman, Mr. Spargo was above all a family man. He never complained about the overwhelming gender disparity among his offspring. Steve and Johnnie Spargo maintained a warm and loving family home that nurtured and launched their children and grandchildren into varied and interesting careers and life choices. Their home was always a welcoming and nurturing shelter when their adult children sought help in times of need. He encouraged his family in all their individual interests with special support for their higher education. He had a quiet yet firm demeanor and a deep and abiding love for his wife, whose blue eyes and black hair caught his eye when they were children.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 13th at Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Chapel, Arkadelphia, with burial at Rose Hill Cemetery with Father Douglas Anderson, Rector of St. James Episcopal Church, Texarkana, officiating.
