Shirley Mae McNeal, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, peacefully passed away on January 15, 2025. Born on April 20, 1947, in Holly Springs, Mississippi, she leaves behind a legacy of warmth, love, and cherished memories.
Shirley dedicated a significant part of her professional life as a cook at the Arkansas Health Center, where her warm personality and caring nature shone through every meal she prepared. She was the very essence of a "Southern Belle," renowned for her sweet demeanor and a servant's heart. She had an innate ability to bring joy to those around her, often going out of her way to assist others, whether through cooking or simply lending a helping hand.
Her family meant the world to her, and she took immense pride in being a grandmother. Shirley treasured every moment spent with her grandchildren, often playing on the floor with them, regardless of her age. She was so grateful and considered it a blessing to be able to watch them grow up. Shirley was particularly fond of yard sales, frequently dragging her grandkids along for fun adventures in search of knick-knacks, especially anything adorned with or involving angels. Her commitment to family extended beyond blood, as she found solace and purpose within her church community, where she devoted her time and energy, always eager to be of service.
Shirley's happiest moments were spent at Lake Ouachita and DeGray during many cherished summers alongside her loved ones, including her beloved husband of almost 53 years, Pat T. McNeal, and her son, Charles (Audri) McNeal. She was also a proud grandmother to Ethan (Sara) McNeal, Evan McNeal, Emma McNeal, Elyse McNeal, and a delighted great-grandmother to Levi McNeal, Micah McNeal, and Jude McNeal.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles James and Lilly Mae Humphrey, and her siblings, Guyton Humphrey, Marylou Brown, James Humphrey, Kathleen Jones, George Humphrey, Curtis Humphrey, and Jim Curtis Humphrey.
A memorial service celebrating Shirley's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at Victory Baptist Church, 5364 Hwy 67, Benton, Arkansas, 72015. Friends and family are invited to share in the remembrance of a truly remarkable woman.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Shirley’s name to Southern Christian Home for Children. Shirley was proud of her upbringing at the Southern Christian Home for Children and made it a point to return and participate in their annual banquet, emphasizing the importance of her roots and connections.
The family would like to extend a special and heartfelt thank you to Victory Baptist Church as well as Pastor Brandon for the overwhelming support, visits, and meals during this difficult time.
Shirley Mae McNeal will be forever remembered for her kindness, love for family, and the countless lives she touched. Her spirit and legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
