Sherman R. Yates, age 80 of Bismarck died Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005 in St. Joseph Mercy Health Center. He was born June 4, 1925 in Bismarck, the son of the late Dwight Moody and Gracie Lee Pierce Yates. He was a graduate of Henderson College in 1953, a Korean war veteran and a deacon at the First Baptist Church in Bismarck. He was retired office clerk for Armco Steel Co. in Houston, TX. In his early years he taught school and coached girls basketball at Leachville, Mt. Pine & Bismarck school districts. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Yates.
Survivors include one son, Michael Yates of Bismarck; four daughters, Jinnie Washmon of Dayton,TX, Kitty Yates of Humble, TX, Carol Hopkins of Houston, TX and Melissa Gonzales of Tomball, TX; three sisters, Bess Jackson of Bismarck, Juanita Thomasson and Vera Downs of Arkadelphia; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM. Saturday, October 29, 2005 in Ruggles-Wilcox Chapel with Pastor Bobby Cook officiating. Interment will be in the New Bismarck Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Friday at the funeral home.
