Sandra Kay Matthews

November 21, 1951 — October 26, 2020

Sandra Kay Matthews, aged 68, of Amity, went to be with her savior on Monday, October 26, 2020, surrounded by her family.

She was born on November 21, 1951, in Hot springs to Charles L. and Velma Matthews. She was preceded in death by her parents and leaves behind her husband of 36 years, Mike Scroggins of Amity, a granddaughter, Tyler Hosey of Amity, one sister, Rhonda ( John Paul) Mills of Hot Springs and niece Stephanie (Jonathon) Gibson of Hot Springs, one aunt Bertie Mullings, of Hot Springs, numerous cousins and special friends: her Lab Billy Earl, Diane, Betty, Flap, Lisa, Cara, Anne and Steve.

Sandy was a graduate of LHHS and OBU, a public-school teacher for 36 years, from elementary to high school where she facilitated and mentored Gifted and Talented students while also coaching Quiz Bowl and chess teams. Her former students delighted her with their achievements and examples of citizenship.

Sandy had a beautiful voice and played the piano. Her music list would range from bluegrass and Buddy Guy to Emmy Lou and Levon, to Ray Charles and zydeco. She sang her way across Europe with the choir from Central Baptist Church.

She was at one with nature and loved to travel. Once she drove a Buick Park Avenue from Arkansas to Newfoundland, Canada. She paddled many rivers and was a member of the Arkansas Canoe Club and the Buffalo River Babes. An avid hiker, she rambled from the Ozette Trail on the west coast to Cadillac Mtn. on the east coast, from the Pecos Baldy Wilderness, NM, to the Mabou Highlands, Nova Scotia, CA, from the Pasayton Wilderness and Lake Chelan in the North Cascades, to the Chattooga Rec. Area, including numerous Fourteeners, as well as Mt. Democrat and Mt. Quandry. One of her favorite hikes was an all-day hike in The Tetons sans clothes, getting back to camp only minutes before the pack horses came through.

Her favorite congregations occurred on rivers, was a Hog Fan from birth, an ardent supporter of MerleFest, and a Dutch-oven chef.

There will be a joyous celebration of Sandy's life at the Piney Grove Methodist Church parking lot, Hot Springs, at noon on November 7, 2020.

We all know that Sandy would not want anyone to get sick because of her. If you choose to attend, please use all safety precautions.

Flap Jones will dedicate her Saturday night radio show on 89.1 in Sandy's honor and share some of Sandy's favorite music on at 6:00pm Saturday, November 7, 2020.
