Sammy Murvel Cottrell, age 78, of Glenwood, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, with his loving family by his side.
He was born on June 27, 1945, in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, the son of Olen and Margie Cottrell. Sammy was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Elaine. He was also preceded in death by his three sons, Johnny Lynn Cottrell, Keith Wayne Cottrell, and Murvel Lee Cottrell; his parents; his three brothers, Dow, Bailey, and Charles Cottrell; and his two sisters, Sandy Nabors and Lois Bollinger.
He was a loving Papa to his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Sammy was called to preach at the age of 12 ½ years old. The passion of his life was preaching the gospel among the free holiness fellowship.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy, of six years; his three loving children and their spouses, Tammy and Aaron Burnett of Cunningham, Kentucky, Tharold and Gretchen Cottrell and Tony and Heather Cottrell, all of Glenwood, and Diana Taylor and her husband, Joey of Seymour, Missouri; twenty-three grandchildren; forty-one great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; his six sisters, Retha Nelson, Alta Ward, Danna Thompson, Cathy Santos, Alice Cottrell, and Rachel Willis; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and a host of wonderful friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, October 21, 2023, in the Dripping Springs Holiness Campground, 272 Highway 84 West, Glenwood, AR, with Bro. Johnny Don Lee, Bro. Aaron Burnett, Bro. Orville Cottrell, Bro. Gerald Anderson, Bro. David Perry and Bro. Sam Anderson officiating.
Visitation will be held Friday, 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM, in the Trinity Holiness Church, Glenwood.
Interment will be in the Mount Tabor Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Home, Glenwood, 209 North Third Street, Glenwood, Arkansas 71943.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Dewayne Cottrell, Andrew Cottrell, Johnny Wayne Cottrell, Trevor Cottrell, Trey Cottrell, Trendon Burnett, David Burnett, Samuel Burnett, and Josiah Burnett.
Honorary pallbearers will be the brethren of Trinity Holiness Church.
