William Jewell "Sam" Hayes age 72 of Arkadelphia died Saturday in Little Rock. He was born July 9, 1938 the son of Sam and Mae Maher Hayes. Sam was owner and operator of Pig Pit restaurant for 34 years. After retirement he continued to work at Fat Boy's restaurant. Sam served in the Arkansas National Guard for 43 years, retiring at the rank of Master SGT. He was a faithful member of Third Street Baptist Church where he served as Deacon. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Debbie Hayes-Watson and Kim Hayes-Klein, his parents, three brothers, Herbert, Robert, and James Hayes, and a sister, Vanette Wingfield.
Survivors inclued his wife, Edith Hayes, one son Mark Hayes and his wife Leslie of Arkadelphia, one sister Verna Mae Saucier of Pineville, LA , six grandchildren, Dustin Watson, Lucy Fulmer, Alex Hayes, Katie Hayes, Kylie Hayes and Jesse Klein, one great grandchild Damien Watson.
Funeral services will be 10:30 Tuesday March 1st in Third Street Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Latham officiating. Burial will be in the Harts Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home. Visitation will be 6-8 PM Monday evening at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Third Street Baptist Church Building Fund.
