Sally Chandler

Sally Lucille Kelly Chandler, age 87, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, died October 14, 2006. Lucille was born February 15, 1919 near Gates in Lauderdale County, Tennessee. She was the youngest, and last surviving, of the eleven children of John E. Kelly and Sally Ann Miller Kelly.

She married David Chandler on March 7, 1942 in the First Methodist Church in North Little Rock. In May David was sent to North Africa with the U.S. Army. He served there and in Europe until his return in December 1945. Lucille and David were married until his death on April 2, 1965.

During WWII Lucille worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad in Memphis, where she saved enough money to pay for David to finish his undergraduate degree in engineering at the University of Tennessee. After David?s death, she worked for the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, Dillard?s, and Maybelline.

Lucille was a resident of North Little Rock for over fifty years, but she had also lived in Memphis, Pascagoula, Knoxville, Clemson, and Dallas. She was a member of Lakewood United Methodist Church. Before her membership there, she was a member of Trinity United Methodist where she served as a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Women?s Society.

She had many friends who remember her as a woman of great strength, grace, beauty, and dignity. She loved music and flowers; she grew beautiful lilies, irises, gardenias, and hydrangeas. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh.

Lucille was steadfast in her encouragement of others. Though she did not have the opportunity for college herself, she encouraged and helped her husband, David, her children, and grandchildren to gain as much education as possible. She would often say, ?Education is something no one can take away from you.?

Lucille is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sally Ann Chandler Crisp and Huey Crisp, her son, John Kelly Chandler, daughter-in-law, Julie Reed Chandler, grandchildren Molly Hart Crisp, Mitchell Crisp Patterson, John Reed Chandler, Lauren Kelly Chandler, Grace Katherine Chandler, a great grandson, Dean Patterson, all of Little Rock and North Little Rock, and many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
