Ruth Lorraine Womble, 99, of Cabot, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2023, with her family by her side. She was born to Lloyd Lewis, Sr. and Rebecca Harkins Lewis on June 18, 1923 in Camden, Arkansas.
Her father moved her and her brother to Hazen when she was around 3 yrs. of age. Ruth’s mother passed away and her grandmother Pernie, on her father’s side, helped to raise Ruth and Lloyd, Jr. As a young lady, Ruth later moved to Little Rock, Arkansas where she was introduced to Eugene “Gene” Womble. Little did she know, this would be the man she would soon fall in love with and spend the majority of her adult life, until his passing.
Ruth and Eugene were married on August 23, 1949, and began their life together in the Northshore community of North Little Rock. They remained there, while raising their 4 children; Tommy, Becky, Sherry and Debbie. God and family were among the most important values they instilled upon their children. Eugene worked for the AP&L power plant on Lynch Drive, until his retirement, and Ruth was a homemaker for her family.
In her earlier years, she loved cooking and baking for family and special holiday dinners. We miss her made-from-scratch cornbread dressing, fried chicken, potatoe salad and her pies with the meringue on top, just to name a few. She was always happy to see everyone enjoying themselves. Ruth also loved listening to music. Her favorites ranged from gospel to country. One favorite of hers was, “You Are My Sunshine”, which she was always ready to sing for anyone. Ruth was truly an inspiration to all the younger generations of her family.
Ruth was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. She was known as “Nana” to all her grandchildren, and to many others as well. To know her was to love her. She loved everyone unconditionally, even those that were not her own, and they all respected and loved her too. She was a person you could go to when needing advice or just needing someone to talk to. She was always uplifting and encouraging to all that knew her. Ruth would take you in if you needed somewhere to stay, feed you if you were hungry, and would give you her last dollar if you needed it. She helped out many in their time of need in one way or another. Ruth was a gentle soul, and she enjoyed each day God blessed her with.
Ruth was preceded in death by her father, Lloyd Lewis, Sr.; her mother, Rebecca Harkins Lewis; a brother, Lloyd Lewis, Jr.; her husband, Eugene Womble; a son, Tommy Womble; her daughter, Debbie Cates; daughter Sherry Ray; and a son-in-law Garry Norman. Ruth is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Womble Norman of Cabot, her grandchildren, Shannon Fleming (Dennis) of Cabot, Brian Norman of North Little Rock, Chad Norman (Carrie) of Ward, Dustin Norman of Cabot, Danny Ray (Jennifer) of Cabot, Jason Ray of North Little Rock, Carla Ferguson (Billy) of Cabot, numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, and a host of extended family members and friends.
We were all blessed by having her in our lives for so many years and we have so many wonderful memories that will last us a lifetime. Ruth was ready when God called her home. She was at peace and her family was there with her. We will miss her so much, but can all find comfort in knowing she is rejoicing with those that had been waiting for her in Heaven. We will love her forever and she will always be in our hearts. Remembering her will be “Our Sunshine”.
