Roy Neil Shope age 83 of Arkadelphia passed away Saturday, April 4, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 2, 1926 to Agnes Rowe and Jeames Murdock Shope at Okolona (Smyrna Community) Arkansas.
Roy attended Okolona High School and graduated in 1943 as valedictorian of his class. While attending Henderson State Teachers College, he was called for active duty for World War II. He spent his nineteenth birthday fighting in the Battle of the Bulge in Normandy. This was the coldest winter in European history. Later, he served in the Korean Conflict.
He was a dedicated and faithful employee of Elk Horn Bank & Trust Co. for forty-five years and served on the Board of Directors for ten years after his retirement. He would tell everyone that he looked forward to going to work everyday. Roy was a member of Pine Street Church of Christ in Arkadelphia.
Roy was married to JoAnn May on December 22, 1951. They were blessed to have two daughters, Laura Anne and Janet Lynn and two special grandsons, Bradley Neil and Joseph Andrew. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Claude Shope and one sister, Bobbie Pennington.
Survivors include his loving wife of fifty-seven years, JoAnn Shope; two daughters, Laura Anne Shope and Janet Lynn Dean both of Little Rock; two special grandsons, Bradley Neil Dean and Joseph Andrew Bartsch both of Little Rock; one brother Donald C. Shope and wife, Asalene of Arkadelphia; one sister, Peggy Loomis of Murfreesboro, AR; one sister-in-law, Bobbie Shope of Rogers, AR; a very special father and mother in-law, Viola and Fred Barnell Maddox of Antoine, AR who thought of him as their son.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 8, at Pine Street Church of Christ in Arkadelphia with Bro. Jim Buie and Bro. Randy Hughes officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Antoine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Darwin Hendrix, David Brain Hendrix, Royce Loomis, David Shope, Ronnie Echols, Rick Medlock, Larry Whitley, Donnie Smith, David Leslie Hendrix and Benson Hendrix. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Pine Street Church of Christ.
Visitation will be at Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home on Tuesday, 6-8 PM.
