Roy Lee Hinson was born on December 6, 1933 to RL and Willie Lee Hinson. He attended Pine Bluff High School, graduating in 1952 and was proud to play on the 1951 Zebra state championship football team. He attended Arkansas State Teachers College (UCA) earning a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Roy retired in 1987 from AT&T and enjoyed his second career as Chief Deputy Sheriff for Pulaski County.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Dot Hinson; sister, Janet Harris; sons, Lee Hinson (Marsha) of Little Rock and Wally Hinson (Jennifer) of Cornelia, Georgia; stepsons, Joe Sullivan (Paula) of Maumelle, Russ Sullivan of Arlington, Virginia, and Steve Sullivan (Jennifer) of Raleigh, North Carolina. He loved and was proud of his nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and was also considered a beloved grandfather to countless young men.
Roy was a big man with a big heart. He was an avid Razorback football fan. He launched a men’s morning coffee group at McDonald’s that continues today. Roy loved his friends, his family, his God, and his church, where he taught a men’s Sunday School class for many years. Roy looked for the best in everyone and helped anyone who needed him.
If you want to honor Roy’s work in our community, memorials can be made to Arkansas Baptist Children and Family Ministries; The Shack (theshack1.com); or Geyer Springs First Baptist Church.
