Commander Ross E. Breshears, US Navy Reserve (Retired), 88, of Little Rock went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, August 26, 2011. Ross loved the Lord, his family and friends. Even though he will be missed here on earth he will have a joyous homecoming with those who have already been received into the Lord's house.
He was born in Springfield, Missouri on January 21st, 1923 to Joseph Eldon and Ester Breshears, who will be some of the first to welcome him home. After the separation of his parents early in life he had the distinct pleasure of having two extended families that became a loving addition in every way. On August 26th, 2011, God decided it was time to let the lease expire on his rented body here on Earth. It was time to move to a new and better place where the lease never expires and everything has been paid in advance for eternity. He leaves behind a host of wonderful memories and will be waiting for family and friends who are believers to join him for eternity. Upon settling in to his new home, he will immediately be looking for anyone who would like to go fishing. Simon Peter will probably be the first person he contacts to find out where the hotspots are and what fish are biting.
He was married on the 16th of August, 1946 to Gillette Daugherty of Mobile, Alabama. The happily married couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on August 16th, 2011. God allowed Ross and Gill (short for Gillette), to be blessed with two children, Anita Breshears Morgeson, husband Dan, son Matt, and daughter Kim of Edmond, Oklahoma; Don Breshears, son Blake, wife Stacie, daughter Dixie, and son Wyatt, of Little Rock.
Dad enlisted in the United States Navy upon graduating from Southwest Missouri State in 1947. Upon completion of Officer Candidate School, he was assigned to duty at Norfolk, Virginia. This is where he met his future bride, a Navy nurse, on the dance floor and the rest is history. Mother would be the first to confess, "Man, could he Dance!" She will be looking forward to the time she can dance with him again. He was involved in the Korean War and the Bay of Pigs Conflict in Cuba. He retired at the rank of Commander after 22 years of faithful service to his country. Dad went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company where he retired with 38 years of loyal service. His father, Eldon, also worked for Southwestern Bell. He retired with 50 years of service, which doesn't happen very often in today's society. Upon retiring they immediately purchased an Airstream Trailer and a Suburban and averaged 2-3 months on the road for almost 12 years.
Dad was very involved with his church and church family and encouraged his family to do the same. He was a deacon at Immanuel Baptist Church where he and his wife were members since 1947. He was also a longtime member of the Pulaski Heights Lions Club. Ross was a man of few words, but we learned the words he spoke were important. He knew exactly when to express the importance of an event or situation and was always able to provide valuable advice, which we often did not realize until later. We never went without if it was in his ability to provide it to us. He was fair, honest, trustworthy and loving. Dad, from all of us, here is hoping to always cast your line in the correct spot and check them out before we get there, your loving family. We will miss you, but a friend reminded me not to be sad and discouraged because you are in a place that you wanted to go your entire life. Rejoice and be glad in it!
Visitation will be Tuesday, August 30 from 6-8 p.m. at the Immanuel Baptist Church Chapel. Services with Military Honors will be Wednesday, August 31 at 11:00 a.m., at the Church, officiated by Rev. Gary Hollingsworth. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Immanuel Baptist Church Building Fund.
