Rosa Lee Cummings, 99, passed from this life, on April 16, 2024, to join many other family and friends who had gone on before. Rosa was born on March 2, 1925, in Rison, Arkansas. Her parents were Fred C. and Elsie Lockhart Miller.
Rosa is preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, George Lewis Cummings. Rosa was also proceded in death by her daughter, Sue Crain. Rosa was also preceded by her parents, two brothers and two sisters and their spouses, nine brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-law and their spouses.
Rosa is survived by her children Brenda Cummings, Lou Ford, Bruce Cummings (Berta), Grant Cummings (Charlene), and Glenn Cummings (Sonni), nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Rosa was a member of the Sylvan Hills United Methodist Church, which she joined in 1959. Rosa was very active in her church. She served on the Worship Committee, Trustees, Altar Arts, United Methodist Women and the Quilting Angels, the quilting group that served their church by donating all monies raised to go back into the church.
When not busy at the church, Rosa was serving her community through the PTA, Country Club Manor Home Extension, Sherwood Beautification Committee, Cub Scouts and Little League. Rosa also designed and made the official flag of Sherwood in 1976. The flag has been carried in every parade since.
In addition to the many public activities, Rosa also had many personnel interests. There was nothing that she could not master: calligraphy; gardening; painting; ceramics; knitting; crocheting; tatting; quilting; sewing; cake making; and tons of other arts and crafts. Rosa’s greatest pleasure came from family and friends. In 1974, Rosa started the Cummings Family Reunion. The first reunion was held at Buffalo River National Park and was so successful a new location was needed to accommodate more attendees. In the 50 years since, the reunion has been held at Fin and Feather Resort in Oklahoma.
In a book entitled Reflections from a Mother’s Heart there was a question, "What would be the most wonderful gift you could receive?" This was Rosa’s response, "I guess this could or would be the most wonderful gift I could ever hope for: to have the love of my family. I have done the best I can do to raise my family, to teach them to love and respect. I love for my grandchildren to ask me to do things for them. To be wanted."
A visitation will be held from 2:00PM-3:00PM Saturday, April 20, 2024 at Sylvan Hills United Methodist Church with a funeral service following at 3:00PM. Burial will be at 10:00AM Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery.
