Dr. Robert William Stagg went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 12, 2006. He was born February 14, 1932 in Alexandria, Louisiana, the son of Albert Manly and Pauline Barron Stagg. Dr. Stagg earned his Doctor of Theology degree at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 1960. During his career he pastored several churches and served in the religion department at East Texas Baptist College for 8 years and as Professor of Religion at Ouachita Baptist University for 30 years. He was the first holder of the J.C. and Mae F. Fuller Chair of Bible at Ouachita from 1989-1998 and was named Professor Emeritus of Bible at his retirement. His sabbaticals included biblical and language studies in New York, Germany, Scotland, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, and Belgium. He was a member of the Association of Baptist Teachers of Religion and served as the organization's Secretary/Treasurer from 1983-1992, Vice-President from1974-75 and 1992-93, and President from 1975-76 and 1993-94. His published writings included magazine and newsletter articles and Sunday school materials. Dr. Stagg was a member of the Arkadelphia Rotary Club, where he served as a board member from 1975-76 and as bulletin editor from 1978-80. He also enjoyed travel, photography, and teaching an adult Sunday school class. He will be remembered for his solid walk with Christ and his love for his family and others.
Dr. Stagg is survived by his wife Betty Slayter Stagg, their children, Dr. Alan Stagg and wife Tammy of Santa Fe, NM and Miss Sarah Stagg of Little Rock, AR and two grandchildren, Derek and Haley Stagg of Santa Fe. He is also survived by a brother, Dr. Paul Stagg of Cambridge, MD and four sisters, Mrs. Patricia Cockerham of Little Rock, AR, Mrs. Ruth Craigo and Mrs. Mary Gadberry both of Pineville, LA and Mrs. Virginia Colvin of Orlando, FL.
Funeral services will be 10 A.M. Tuesday, July 18 in the First Baptist Church of Arkadelphia with Dr. Randall O'Brien of Baylor University officiating under the direction of Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 6-8 P.M. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Robert Stagg Scholarship Fund at Ouachita Baptist University.
