Robert D. Holloway, Sr. of Little Rock passed away October 21, 2018. Mr. Holloway was born December 15, 1938 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma to Elizibeth Smith Holloway and Gilbert Henry Holloway, Sr. Robert Holloway (aka Bobby Holloway) attended Central High School and graduated in 1956. Mr. Holloway played football under the famous "Wilson Matthews" during their undefeated run at Central High.
Mr. Holloway started his college years at Oklahoma State University pursuing an architectural degree. He then transferred to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where he received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering.
Mr. Holloway started his career at The Army National Corp. of Engineers in Little Rock, Arkansas. He worked on such projects as Greer's Ferry Dam and the Arkansas River Navigation project. While at his job at the Corp, he met his first wife, Mary, and they had three children together Rob, Lisa and Eric.
A private Engineering Firm, Ray Russell, hired Mr. Holloway. During his career with Ray Russell he was instrumental in designing many of the recreational facilities in our Arkansas State Parks.
Mr. Holloway chose to venture off on his own and start his own Firm, Robert D. Holloway Inc. He started his business out of the carport of his Home in Cammack Village in 1971. Mr. Holloway's first project on his own was "Dog Patch USA". Not long after that, the Cromwell Firm asked him to assist in the beginning Designing phases of what was then Maumelle New Town. Mr. Holloway moved his Company to Maumelle where he finished out his distinguished career. Mr. Holloway was the creator of the idea of Lake Willastein. The original sketch, drawn by hand of Lake Willastein, to this day, is hanging in his office. Some of Mr. Holloway's accomplishments include: Wrightsville Power Plant, many municipal water/sewer projects throughout the State, Lake Willastein, walking trails and pathway systems throughout most of Maumelle, much of the commercial, industrial and residential developments in the city of Maumelle, and many residential developments throughout Central Arkansas
In the early 90's, Mr. Holloway flew over The White Oak Bayou, with then Senator Cliff Hoofman, scouting an appropriate route for what is soon to be Maumelle's 3rd entrance.
Mr. Holloway was never afraid of adventure. He loved camping, off-roading and hiking with his kids at an early age. He loved teaching and sharing his love for nature, wildlife and shared his extreme pleasure of birdwatching with his kids. He gave his kids the opportunity at an early age to learn the responsibility of hard work by entrusting and allowing them to work at his office. He was a strong example of good work ethics for his children and grandchildren.
Mr. Holloway, and his wife, Paula, had an immense love of Tennessee walking horses. He served as the President of the Arkansas Racking Horse Association for several years. He owned several horses and competed in many shows throughout his adult life.
Mr. Holloway was appointed by then Governor Mike Beebe to be on the Arkansas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Mr. Holloway also served on the Board of "Our House". He always had a generous heart for those in need!
Mr. Holloway loved his family, career, his wife, Paula, pretty women, karaoke, birds and just the beauty of outdoors. We will miss him dearly!
If you ever see an ivory billed woodpecker always think of our Dad, Bob Holloway.
Survivors include three children: Robert D. Holloway, Jr (Shannon), Lisa Holloway-Sugg (Greg) and John Eric Holloway (Lori); eleven grandchildren: Jeremy Justin Holloway, Teisha Kyla Holloway, Kyle Patrick Holloway, Brittany Danielle Jacobs (Greg), Christina Elizabeth Laura Kaplan (Eric), Michelle Carney Flournoy (Richard), Sarah Knowlton Carney, Trent Selig Sugg (Bailey), Lyndsey Morgan Holloway, Nathan Alexander Holloway, Jack Talmidge Holloway; four great-grandchildren; Kylie Marie Funk, Zoe Kaplan, Adrian Holloway, Alice Flournoy; and sister, Patricia Ann Sprenger.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Paula Clayton-Holloway; siblings: Gilbert Henry Holloway, Jr., James Clifford Holloway and Dorothy Lee Faulkner; and a step-son Paul Purkiss.
Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 25, 2018 at The Community Church at Maumelle followed by interment in Ida Mission Cemetery, Little Rock. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at Smith-North Little Rock Funeral Home.
