Robert "Bob" Lee McElhanon, age 79, of Glenwood, died Saturday, January 18, 2014. He was born on February 17, 1934, in Marfa, Texas, the son of Paul McElhanon and Lillie Free McElhanon. On April 26, 1963, he was married to Margaret Ann Thompson. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jim McElhanon; and his sister, Loise Suttee. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, was a lifetime member of the Glenwood Masonic Lodge #662, and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign War (V.F.W.). Bob dedicated most of his life to law enforcement, having worked with the U.S. Border Patrol out of Texas for several years, worked with the Glenwood Police Department and was the Glenwood Constable for over twelve years. He was a kind and generous man who would go out of his way to help his friends any way he could. He enjoyed fishing, spending time outdoors, and he loved boating with his grandsons, especially pulling them behind the boat on their tubes and dumping them every chance he got. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family, who meant the world to him. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend and he will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his wife, Margaret McElhanon of Glenwood; one son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Julie McElhanon of Glenwood; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dianne and Walter Dunkerson of Atoka, Oklahoma and Mary Ellan and Oscar DeLeon of Alexander; four grandchildren, Curtis Dunkerson, John Dunkerson, Sabrina McElhanon and Danny McElhanon; one brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Vinita McElhanon of Greenville, Texas; one sister, Betty Payne of Virginia; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of wonderful friends. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, January 21, 2014, in the Davis-Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Glenwood with Bro. Tony Hill and Bro. Warren Foxworthy officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Thaddeus H. Caraway, V.F.W., Post #2278 Honor Guard. Guest registry is at www.davis-smith.com.
