Richard “Wayne” Guthrie, age 75, of Glenwood, passed away on Wednesday, February 16, 2022.
He was born on March 26, 1946, in Gladys, Virginia, the son of Richard Albert Guthrie and Edna Bentley Guthrie. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his stepdaughter, Patty Kennedy.
He was Baptist in his faith and was an avid baseball fan and loved to watch all the teams play on the baseball channel, and it didn’t even matter to him who the teams were, he just loved his baseball. He also enjoyed going to yard sales, collecting antique, and watching the old classic -shows and movies like the Andy Griffith show, Gunsmoke and pretty much any old westerns.
For several years Wayne was a tobacco farmer and also loved growing homegrown vegetables on his family farm until he was just no longer able to. He never met a stranger that he couldn’t find something to talk to them about and was always sure to stop and speak with someone in a crowd most places he would go. Wayne’s greatest joy in life was spending time with this family, who was everything to him and he loved with all his heart. He will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Serina and Bill Hawkins of Glenwood; his stepson and his wife, Tom and Nettie Kennedy of Waxahachie, Texas; three grandchildren, Debbie Farmer and her husband, Rob, Stephen Nicolai and Jennifer Hawkins; seven great-grandchildren, Riley, Luke, Bambi, Dominic, Brielle, William and Matthew; the love of his life, Shirley Guthrie of Grandview, Texas; his sister and brother-in-law, Gayle and Steve Davis of Lynchburg, Virginia; his nephew, Kevin Davis and his wife Lisa; his niece, Karen Bresach and her husband, Ryan; his great-nephews, Carson, Holt and Hudson; his great-niece, Anna Claire; and numerous cousins, extended family members and a host of wonderful friends.
The family will hold a memorial service to celebrate the life of Wayne at a later date to be announced.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Home, Glenwood.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Wayne’s memory to the American Diabetes Association or to the American Cancer Association.
