Raymond Mayer

Dr. Raymond F. Mayer of Little Rock, Arkansas, died February 21, 2010, at the age of 95 at Presbyterian Village in Little Rock after a short illness.
A native of Pomaria, South Carolina, he spent his professional life practicing medicine in Memphis. Dr. Mayer attended Wofford College, graduated from the University of South Carolina, Tulane Medical School in New Orleans and interned at Emory University in Atlanta. He completed a residency in urology at the University of Tennessee School of Medicine in Memphis and at Baptist Memorial Hospital. He was in private practice and served as a member of the faculty of UT from 1945 to 1990. He served two terms as Chief of Staff and two terms as President of the Staff at Baptist Memorial Hospital. In 1989, the National Kidney Foundation named him Physician of the Year. Dr. Mayer was an Elder at Idlewild Presbyterian Church for many years. An avid steam railroad enthusiast and member of several Railroad clubs, Dr. Mayer never strayed far from his love of country living. After his retirement in 1990, Dr. and Mrs. Mayer moved to Arkansas. He was a member of Cabot United Methodist Church.
Dr. Mayer was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-eight years, Mary Westover Mayer; a daughter, Carolyn Arnold; two infant grandchildren; and five siblings. He is survived by two sisters and a brother in South Carolina; a son, Bob and Laurel of Ward, Arkansas; two daughters, Brownie and John Gibbs of Olive Branch, Mississippi; and Becky and David Gribble of Germantown; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and a large extended family.
Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday, February 24, 2010, at Memorial Park Funeral Home
in Memphis with a graveside service following at 1:00 p.m. at Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Cabot United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 118, Cabot, AR 72023, or to the charity of your choice.
