Ray James Hughes of Sheridan, Arkansas was born
At Gum Springs Arkansas (Clark County) on December 23, 1919. He was the son of the late Claude Christopher and Carrie Hudman Hughes. He passed away at home on February 25 2011 at the age of 91.

Ray was a lifetime member of the DAV. He served in the European African, Middle East area campaign with the First Armored Division as tank driver. He received a purple heart, oak leaf cluster, 8 bronze stars, and a good conduct medal. He enjoyed gardening and camping with his family. He retired from the Grant County Road Department in 1983.

Besides his parents Ray was preceded in death by six sisters, Doris Hughes, Fern Green, Hazel Norton, Claudia McKinnon, Margaret Howie, and Thelma Carter, Three brothers Barney, Garrett and Carlie Hughes. And one grandson Scott Pumphrey.

Ray is survived by his wife of 63 years Jewell Dean Buck Hughes. Three sons Richard ( Donna ) Hughes and
Donald ( Vicky ) Hughes of Sheridan. Michael ( Teri ) Hughes of Arkadelphia. One daughter Judy ( Mike ) Pumphrey of Prattsville. He also had eight grandchildren Denise ( Brent ) Holliman, Mark (Shannon)
Pumphrey, Michele Pumphrey, Brian ( Kelli )Hughes, Kathy ( Scott ) Dutton, Traci, Chad, and Deana Hughes. Also surviving are great - grandchildren James, Jacob, and James Brayden Hughes, Zach Dutton, Michael Hollinger, Alanna and Briar Pumphrey, Zach and Cole Mallican.

Funeral services will be 2 PM Monday February 28th in the Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Chapel in Arkadelphia with Rev. Mike Walton officiating. Burial will be in the Harts Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-4 Sunday at the funeral home.
