Polly Steffy

Polly L. Steffy, 91, formerly of Little Rock, passed away in Simi Valley, California on May 5, 2015. She was born on June 9, 1923 in Little Rock to Carl Lee and Frances (Ladd) Garms. Polly grew up in Little Rock, graduated from Little Rock High School and continued her education at St. John's College in Kansas. She graduated with high honors and her Bachelor's Degree from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana in 1945.

Shortly before her Valparaiso graduation, she met Hugh Steffy, a GI returning from Germany during World War II. They met at the train station in Chicago while waiting for their respective trains. Hugh was smitten by Polly, the beautiful redhead, and their courtship began.

Polly was a devout Missouri Synod Lutheran throughout her lifetime, and a devoted follower of Christ. During her youth, she was a member of First Lutheran Church of Little Rock. After receiving her diploma, she moved to St. Louis, Missouri to begin her career as a Social Worker for Lutheran Children's Friends. Polly and High were married at First Lutheran Church on December 25, 1946. They soon moved to Columbus, Ohio where Hugh obtained his Bachelor's Degree from Ohio State University, which was followed by moves to St. Louis, Little Rock, Springfield, Illinois for ten years, Ft. Wayne, Indiana briefly, and ultimately to the Los Angeles and Oxnard areas of Southern California. Although they spent a few years in Chandler, Arizona toward the end of their lives, they always dreamed of returning to their beloved California. Polly retired as an Escrow Officer with the Bank of America.

Survivors include her children, Frances Ladd Helfand (George) of Simi Valley, Mark I. Steffy (Megan) of Oakview, California and Stephen C. Steffy (Ninon) of Chandler, Arizona; grandchildren, Rosalind, Rachel, Ben, Sam, Dan and Nick; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Steffy; and brothers, Albert and Charles Garms.
