Phillip Dougherty

Phillip Hugh Dougherty, 95, of Little Rock, died on December 16, 2018.

Phil (known as "Flip" in his youth) was born in Little Rock on March 28, 1923, and grew up there. He graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1945 with a BA in Business. While at the University he met Jane Adams, and they were married in Memphis in 1946.

Early in his career Phil worked for Sears in Little Rock, Alabama, and Florida before relocating to Burlington, North Carolina, in 1951. In North Carolina he worked for several textile companies, most notably Sellers Manufacturing Company in Saxapahaw, before returning to Arkansas in 1968.

In 1968, Phil opened a Western Auto Store in Magnolia. He later often remarked how running the store opened all kinds of doors for him, both professionally and personally. He also went back to college, and in 1980 he obtained a Master's Degree in Counseling from Southern Arkansas University (SAU). He subsequently taught classes at SAU for more than ten years.

Phil closed his Western Auto in 1999 and "retired," but he quickly grew bored. Six months later he took a job with Central Arkansas Development Corporation as a dispatcher, driver and assistant supervisor before finally retiring for good at age 88. In 2013, he moved to Woodland Heights in Little Rock.

Jane died in 2005, but Phil is survived by his daughter Mandy, his son Phil, his sister Rosemary and a wide assortment of friends, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday, December 21, at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Ct. (NW corner I-630 and Barrow Rd.), (501)224-2200. Phil's online guestbook may be signed at www.littlerockfuneralhome.com.
