Paul Frederick Tweedy, 89, of Beebe, Arkansas, died Thursday, December 31, 2009. He was born in Centerville, Iowa on December 12, 1920, to Ony A. and Laura Bell (Ellis) Tweedy. He joined the National Guard while still in high school and became part of the regular Army when the Guard was federalized in early 1941. He trained at Camp Claiborne and Fort Dix in the U.S. and also in England, from where he sailed into the Mediterranean for the African Invasion and fought against Rummel and his army. Paul spent two years and three months as a prisoner of war in various camps in Germany.
He married Irene Seehase on July 21, 1946 at Sumner (Buck Creek), Iowa. After his Army discharge, Paul attended Iowa State College, now Iowa State University at Ames, Iowa. He came to Arkansas by way of Chicago and Kansas City and established Tweedy Trailer Sales, now known as Tweedys, Inc.
During the early 1970's, he served two years as President of Warehouse Distributors Association for leisure and mobile products in the U.S. and Canada and was named the Association's "Man of the Year" in 1983. He retired to the farm in 1985.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Irene Tweedy; his son, Phillip Tweedy and wife Edie of Cabot; daughter Velora Green and husband Stephen of Russellville; five grandchildren; two great-grandsons; three step-great-grandsons; and one step-great-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Otis and Lawrence.
Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Westbrook Funeral Home, Beebe. Funeral will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Searcy, with burial in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens.
