Owen Danley, age 90, of Mount Ida, passed away on Monday, September 9, 2013. He was born on August 19, 1923, near the Montgomery County community of Washita, the son of Bert Danley and Jessie Blair Danley. He attended school in Mount Ida and was a member of the undefeated high school basketball team. He volunteered into the United States Navy for World War II. Owen served in the Pacific and participated in ten of its eleven major battles aboard the USS Maryland. Injured at sea, he awoke from surgery in a Washington hospital the day the Japanese surrendered. He was mustered out of the service shortly afterwards. Owen married Zaylene Taylor of Kansas on May 24, 1953 and they moved to Chillicothe, Missouri where he worked for Amoco Oil Company. After working 34 years as a head pipeliner, he retired and moved back home to Mount Ida. He served 19 years as a board member of the South Fork Fire Department. He also helped in the building of Lake Ouachita Baptist Church as well as building on the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. Survivors include his wife, Zaylene Danley of Mount Ida; his sister-in-law, Marilyn Danley of Siloam Springs; his brother-in-law, Harold Standridge of Mount Ida; and his nieces and nephews, Steve Standridge, Philip Standridge, Bruce Danley, Keri Akers, Bill Danley, Lori Loden, Linda Mordan and Richard Taylor. Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, September 12, 2013 in the Lake Ouachita Baptist Church with Bro. Ty Huitt officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday, 9:00 AM until service time at the church. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, September 13, 2013, in the Sunset Lawn Cemetery in El Dorado, Kansas. Pallbearers will be Steve Standridge, Philip Standridge, Jared Standridge, Cody Standridge, John Pollock, Jimmy Jones, Lloyd Smith and Tommy Johnston. Honorary pallbearers will be all United States Navy veterans. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood.
