Newton Odell Hammond, 97, of Beebe, Arkansas, died on Sunday, February 19, 2017. He was born in Roosevelt, Arkansas on June 8, 1919, to Clarence and Ica (Castleberry) Hammond. He graduated from Searcy High School and attended Harding College. His National Guard unit was mobilized for WWII and he eventually received his degree from Arkansas State in 1947 on the GI Bill.
During the war he served in the Aleutian Islands and Espiritu Santo as well as various US posts. While passing through Seattle he met Edith Schultz at a USO dance. They married on March 19, 1943. After the war they settled down on a farm near McRae. He was a farmer for most of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife (passed away September 15, 2016), two brothers, and an infant grandson.
He is survived and mourned by three daughters, Janice Mink of Illinois, Margaret Anno of Virginia, and Mary Oehrl of Florida; two sons, William Hammond of Beebe and Steve Hammond of Michigan; seven grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Beebe Church of Christ. Cremation arrangements by Smith-Westbrook Funeral Home, a certified Veterans Funeral Care provider.
