O. Johnson

O. Eugene Johnson, 73, of Little Rock, and formerly of Newport, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014. He was born December 29, 1940 in Pennington, Arkansas to the late Opal Cruse and David Oscar Johnson.
Eugene enlisted in the U.S. Army and retired as a Captain in 2000. He was with the CSC Co. D Commander of the Second Battalion, 153 Infantry. He served as Company Commander of Jackson Co. National Guard, was a member of the VFW Collier Massey Post 4613 in Jackson County and a member of the American Legion Post 0001.
In addition to his military service, Eugene served on the Jackson County Quorum Court District 11 and served as president of Newport Kiwanis. He co-owned and operated Quality Stair Company as well as J & S Agri and Honda, Newport.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a beloved member of the Big Island Cottonwood Point Hunting Club. He was an avid Razorback and Cardinal fan.
Survivors include: wife, Cherry Johnson; son, Tommy Johnson (Sharon); daughters, Whitney and Stacey Simmons; granddaughter, Presley Falwell; sisters, Brenda Dawson and Joann McCully; a niece and four nephews; and his "four-legged humanoid" Tucker. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Peggy Couch.
Graveside memorial service with military honors will be Thursday, September 18, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. Online guest book at www.SmithFamilyCares.com
