Norman Mallett, a former Assistant Chief of the Little Rock Police Department, passed away on January 25, 2025, in Little Rock, Arkansas, at the age of 86. Born on April 8, 1938, he dedicated his life to protecting and serving. Norman was known as "Dad" to his Plumerville High School friends. His family moved in his senior year, and he graduated from Onarga High School in Onarga, IL, before pursuing a degree in Law Enforcement from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He furthered his education through various military trainings and at the FBI National Academy, becoming a lifetime member.
Like his personal life, Norman's professional career was marked by integrity, dedication, and commitment. He served over 30 years in the Army National Guard and 29 years with the Little Rock Police Department. Shortly after retiring with plans to hunt and fish, Norman was recruited out of retirement to work for Burns Security, where a position at Raytheon brought him closer to the aviation industry he loved. He later managed the Mid-South district before retiring.
Outside of his professional life, Norman cherished his time with his family. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Mallett Hyde, and granddaughter, Savannah Hyde. Norman had a lifelong passion for aviation; he loved flying and frequently took his daughter flying with him. He was an avid reader from childhood, enjoyed walks in nature, and was especially fond of the river bottoms. Norman's dedication to caring for his wife during years of health issues is a defining mark of his character.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Phyllis (Burrow) Mallett, as well as his parents, Joseph Herman William Mallett and Norma Ila Maye (Spires) Mallett. Norman was also preceded by his siblings, Naymon and Robert Mallett, and Peggy Mallett Bryant.
Norman was a long-time supporter of the Nature Conservancy and previously served on the board of Goodwill Industries of Arkansas.
