Nelda Ferney

It is with sadness that the family of Nelda Jean Henry La Ferney announces her passing on February 1st at the age of 85. Born on March 19, 1926 in McRae to parents Eva and Fred Henry, she was an only child.

She graduated from McRae High School in 1942. Standing head and shoulders above most of her peers at 5'11", she played basketball for the Trojans. After graduation, she attended Arkansas State University at Beebe. Taking a job at a munitions plant in Jacksonville, she worked until her sweetheart came home from Burma in 1945. She traveled to St. Louis to meet Thurston and bring him home. They were married on November 29, 1945, settling on the family farm. Jean and Thurston started a dairy and had two children. As a young couple they raised cattle, strawberries, hay, and huge gardens of vegetables and, in retirement years, rows and rows of beautiful flowers which could be seen from the highway running by the farm.

Jean was a wife, homemaker, mother, sister-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, friend and loyal McRae United Methodist Church member. She loved her church family dearly and supported her church faithfully. Jean lived on the same land for 82 of her 85 years. In 2007 she made the decision to move away from the only place she had ever called home to live closer to family.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Eva Henry, and her husband of 60 years, Thurston. She is survived by her daughter Gwen Fullen and husband David of Arkadelphia; son Marty La Ferney and wife Nancy of West Memphis; grandchildren Mark Wade Fullen of Oceanside, California (Dory); John David Fullen of Little Rock (Allison); Stacy Lynn Dougherty (Robert) of West Memphis; and Dustin Louis La Ferney (Mrinda) of Jonesboro; and eight great-grandchildren.

As Thurston's wife, she also leaves loving and caring in-laws: Juanita Olmstead of Beebe, Freda Miller of McRae, Cleo and Charles Milton of Searcy, Mary Lou La Ferney of Searcy, Gerald and LaVeta La Ferney of Austin, nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers: Dustin La Ferney, Stacy La Ferney Dougherty, John D. Fullen and Lloyd Henry, Michael Milton, Michelle La Ferney.

Celebration of Life will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 4, 2012, at McRae United Methodist Church. The family will receive visitors in Hammack Hall following the service.
