Murray Edward Helmers

October 7, 1933 — December 24, 2018

Murray Edward Helmers, age 85, of Dallas, Texas, passed away on Monday, December 24, 2018. He was born on October 7, 1933, in Wichita, Kansas, the only child of Edward "Ed" Helmers and Mary Fouts Helmers. On February 11, 1977, he was married to the love of his life, Katherine Mitchell Helmers. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Vicky Dominguez; and his parents. After graduation from Wichita East High School he enrolled in the University of Kansas in Lawrence. His college was interrupted by a two-year tour of duty in the United States Army. He served as a high-speed radio operator while stationed in Korea. After Korea, he then returned to college and graduated as a Petroleum Engineer and Geologist, going on to work his entire life in those fields. He would spend endless hours lecturing his kids, then his grandkids, and just about anyone else that would listen, about rocks, rock formations, volcanoes or pretty much anything connected with Gods amazing creation. In his later years, he often talked about God and his power and assured all of his family that he and God were "just fine". Murray was truly a man of great integrity that loved his family deeply, served his country with pride and honor, and treated the world and people around him with honesty and respect. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him, but he has left each of us with so many wonderful memories to cherish. He is survived by his loving wife, Katherine "Kit" Helmers; two sons, Steve Helmers and his wife, Nancy and Rick Whaner and his girlfriend, Sarah Williams; five grandchildren, Dalton and Kaycee Whaner, Joey Helmers, Wade and Jessica Carrell; four great-grandchildren, Meghan, Elizabeth, Gage and Aleeya; one great-great-granddaughter, Kaycee; a dear life-long friend of his sons, Sean Murphy; the mother of Dalton and Kaycee, Debra; and numerous cousins, extended family members and a host of wonderful friends. Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, December 31, 2018, in the Davis-Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Glenwood, with Bro. Jack Herring and Bro. Bobby Golden officiating. Visitation will be held Monday, 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM, at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Ebenezer Cemetery with military honors provided by the U.S. Army Honors Team. Pallbearers will be Dalton Whaner, Joey Helmers, Wade Carrell, Sean Murphy, Rusty Mitchell and Robert Mitchell. Guest registry is at www.davis-smith.com.
