Murel James Chappell, 100, of North Little Rock passed away Tuesday, October 4, 2022. He was born March 22, 1922 to Jesse John and Atha Jewel Whisnant Chappell.
James served in the US Navy during World War II aboard the USS St. Louis. He attended the University of Tennessee School of Pharmacy and worked for Walgreens until his retirement. As an officer in the local VFW, he raised money for the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. and was on the first Honor Flight from Arkansas to visit the memorial. He volunteered with Meals On Wheels.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of seventy-three years Norma Hestir Chappell, daughter Carol Lynn Chappell, sister Carolyn Jones, brother-in-law Charlie Jones, brother-in-law Cliff Hestir, and nephew Randy Jones.
He is survived by daughter Mary (David) Taylor; granddaughters Lauren (Michael) Taylor and Lindsay (Mike) Fleisher; great-grandsons Matthew and Samuel Fleisher; sister-in-law Shirley Hestir; and several nephews.
Memorials may be given to Arkansas Children's Hospital.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
