Max was born in Montgomery County on September 14, 1922. When he enlisted in the Marine Corp at the age of 17, he said he was 18 so he could go. He fought on Iwo Jima where he was wounded in action March 2, 1945. The doctors wanted to amputate his leg to which he replied, "I'm kind of attached to it." Max often said he was not afraid to risk his own life to help his fellow soldiers live. One day while in battle, when he saw that the Japanese were firing at a man who had no weapon, he tackled the man, drug him into a fox hole and saved his life. He received the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal, and five other medals. His rank was Corporal. Max retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company after 34 years and was also a Cattle Farmer.
A long-time member of Manchester United Methodist Church and the Manchester community, Max was a caring, compassionate, friendly, and humorous man. He enjoyed life, never met a stranger, and loved helping others. He was always joking, even in the last days of his life. He loved squirrel hunting and was nick-named "Dead Eye" for his shooting abilities. He was well-known for raising some of the finest squirrel dogs in the country. Max also loved his friends at the "Honeycomb Restaurant" where he had coffee every morning. All of Max's friends and family will miss his smiling face and funny jokes.
