Mary Jewel Powell

Mary Jewel Cox Powell, 91, of Conway, AR passed away on April 7, 2023.

She was born on December 7, 1931 in Prescott, AR to the late George Nelson Cox Sr. and Jewel Barham Cox. Mary was the youngest of their seven children and was born shortly after her father’s death in 1931.

Mary retired from J.C. Penney after 25 years but was mostly a homemaker. She was an accomplished seamstress who made many of Suzy’s clothes as she grew up including her wedding gown. Mary was a devoted wife and mother and her home was the center of many memorable celebrations.

Awaiting her in Heaven are her husband of 69 years, Rayburn Franklin Powell; son, Rayburn “Franky” Franklin Powell Jr.; sisters, Glendene Haynie and Hazel Powell; brothers, Barham, Pershing, George N, and Charlie Cox.

Remaining to celebrate her memory are her daughter, Suzy (Homer) Sullivan; six grandchildren, Gabe (Nicole) Sullivan, Caleb Sullivan, Andrea (Matt) Bay, Jamie Powell, Jeff (Katie) Powell, and Joe Powell; fourteen great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Her memory will be cherished, and she will be deeply missed by all who love her. The family finds comfort knowing she is reunited with her loving husband and son.

Family will receive visitors on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 from 12:00-1:00PM at Smith Little Rock Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 1:00PM and interment at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Alexander, AR.
