Mary Inez Merritt, age 86, of Amity, died Thursday, August 23, 2012. She was born on February 13, 1926, at Rosboro, the daughter of Lewin Merritt and Velma Oden Merritt. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers Thomas Merritt and Joe Merritt. She served as a veteran of the Cadet Nursing Corp, which in 1988 she was declared a veteran. She was a 1947 graduate of St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Hot Springs, working as a Pike County nurse for ten years and a State of Arkansas nurse for twenty-five years. She was a member of the Glenwood Church of Christ and was named Senior Citizen of the year in 2005 for all of her dedicated work with the Senior Citizens; she loved to travel, but her greatest joy was going on cruises. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Occo Merritt of Ennis, Texas; one nephew, Gary Merritt, and his wife, Audrey, of Ennis, Texas; two nieces, Marsha Merritt of Ennis, Texas and Mary Ferguson and her husband, Rick, of LaVernia, Texas; and great-nieces and great-nephews, Tara, Emily and Alex Ferguson. Services will be held at 4:00 PM, Saturday, August 25, 2012, in the Glenwood Church of Christ. Visitation will be Friday evening, 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Coker Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood. Pallbearers Ronnie Dycus, John Gould, Rick Ferguson, Alex Ferguson, Terry Henson and Darrell Lupplace. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice.
