Mary Jean Moore Bradburn, 90, who was known as Jean, died on Sunday, March 15, 2015 at her home in Parkway Village. A keen observer of people, she was reserved in public and always well dressed to fit the occasion. Her interests included women's fashion and modeling, but she also loved horse racing, golf and bowling.
Born in Fort Smith, Jean's father, Jim Moore, was a salesman who moved the family numerous times before returning to Fort Smith. Her mother, Agnes Garrigan Moore, saw to it that Jean took dance lessons as a child, though Jean much preferred spending time at her grandfather's ranch in Oklahoma. She had an older brother, Jim, and a younger sister, Shirley. Her brother, Jim, received a football scholarship to the University of Arkansas in 1941.
Jean graduated from Fort Smith High School in 1942 and earned an associate degree two years later from Arkansas Tech at Russellville to become a lab technician. After working first at Baptist State Hospital in 1945 at Little Rock, and then St. Edward's Mercy Hospital the next year at Fort Smith, she took a job with the Veteran's Administration at Fort Roots Hospital at North Little Rock. There in 1949 she met a personable, well-traveled doctor four years her senior. Jean and Curry Bradburn Jr. were married on July 25, 1949.
The couple moved to Lexington, Kentucky, where Curry practiced medicine. But they were off to New Orleans in 1951 for Curry to train in urology at Ochsner Medical Center. Two of their three sons, Cary and Jim, were born in New Orleans and their third son Conrad was born in Little Rock. Jean and Curry remained in Little Rock after moving back in late 1953 when he began a career as a urologist for more than 40 years. He and Jean were together almost 54 years until Curry's death in 2003.
Jean was a member of various organizations. Among those were the Pulaski Heights Garden Club, the Greater Little Rock Federation of Women's Club and the Arkansas Medical Society Alliance for which she served two terms as president from 1974 to 1976.
She is survived by a brother, James William (Laura Lee) Moore of Fort Smith; a sister, Shirley (Larry) Boente of Carlinville, Illinois; three sons, Cary Bradburn (Monty) of North Little Rock, Jim Bradburn (Kathy) of Little Rock and Conrad Bradburn (Jeanne) of Jacksonville, Florida; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
